2007 TA Seminar Powerpoint Presentations

Scenarios for Exploring MSU Policies & Procedures

These short scenarios offer a brief look at several key issues teaching assistants need to consider as part of their professional responsibilities. This presentation is designed to provoke conversation about issues addressed in the MSU TA Handbook, Appendix B, and in MSU Spartan Life.

Presentation Principles: Clearly Making Your Point

"Presentation Principles" is Kevin Johnston's "nuts and bolts" look at effective organizational and presentational strategies. Based primarily on the work of Steve Yelon, MSU Professor Emeritus, and Robert Boice, Ph.D., this presentation should help anyone in any teaching context assemble, arrange, and teach their material effectively.

Teaching Effectively from the Heart

"Teaching Art as Teaching Heart." First presented in a more concise version for the International Teaching Assistant Orientation, this presentation seeks to provoke participants into answering deeper questions about how their teaching is very much a matter of their own humanity. More than a teaching principles "How To.", this presentation can serve as the basis for building a teaching philosophy.

Promoting Effective Discussion and taking risks to do it

Professor Chris Womack, George Mason University, and Kevin Johnston's introduction to promoting effective discussion is an excellent starting point for teachers looking to find ways to get their students talking. Along with Kevin Johnston's list of risk-taking strategies, this presentation packs a big and basic punch!

MSU Students 2007

Dr. Nancy Lange's research on MSU Students provides a wide and deep reaching analysis of their lives at the "U". Author of MSU Spotlight Dr. Lange's ongoing work combined with Understanding the Millennial Generation (see below) provide a thorough analysis of MSU's in coming class.

Understanding the Millennial Generation

Many thanks to Pamela Horne, for this comprehensive look at a recent freshman class. It is created both from her own findings and the most up to date research on the subject.

Handling Classroom Conflict

This is a case-based presentation intended as a means for discussing issues related to avoiding and handling classroom incivility. 7 Different scenarios are included, with tips on handling conflict from Professor William Donohue, MSU College of Communication.

Responsible Conduct of Research

One of the most important issues facing today's Academy, and unfortunately, one of the most overlooked, Dr. Terry May's presentation on research ethics provides a nice foundation for the understanding of proper professional conduct at Michigan State.

Office Hours as a Teaching Opportunity

From Rajesh L'al, a math education expert, this presentation is an excellent guide to making the most out of office hours, potentially one of the most important teaching opportunities students, TAs, and faculty encounter.

Teaching Laboratories

Created by Anna Wiese-Monfils, Ph.D., an award-winning teacher of Plant Biology and now professor of Plant Pathology at Central Michigan University, this presentation is an excellent presentation covering all aspects of handling labs. Intended as a comprehensive guide for teaching assistants handling labs for the first time, it also serves a nice refresher for those with some lab teaching experience.

Planning, Resilience, Engagement, Professionalism

Planning, Resilience, Engagement, Professionalism (PREP), The Graduates School's professional development program, offers workshops for every stage of the graudate student career.

MSU GEU

Sandra Schmidt, 2007-2008 President of the Grauduate Employees Union, addresses key issues TA's need to know about the union and working at MSU.
