Creating a Teaching Philosophy You Can Use

As part of my commitment to the FASEB 2008 APS Trainee Advisory Committee, I have created this website for scientists interested in developing a teaching philosophy. Academic positions often require applicants to provide teaching philosophies (or teaching statements) as a part of their teaching portfolios. Increasingly, statements and portfolios also are becoming part of the tenure-review process. Application demands aside, the document can become ultimately a powerful reflective document of your teaching development. These web resources, which include the FASEB workshop presentation, will guide you step-by-step to developing a statement that you can use. My approach to this process results from my personal experience -- years of TP workshops conducted in a variety of contexts nationally and the review and analysis of hundreds of statements -- and from consulting the latest scholarship on what makes these statements work. I hope this site works for you.

Warm Regards,

Kevin
